During the Victorian era, the well-dressed gentleman adhered to a strict dress code, allowing only understated yet functional jewellery items. Among these, the gentleman's watch chain was a rare avenue for personal expression. Traditionally, the crossbar end of the chain was inserted into a buttonhole, while the watch was secured in the vest pocket. The invention of the fob, typically a medal or crest, made retrieving the pocket watch easier. This decorative element hung over the pocket's front and was anchored to the watch chain by a short chain or ribbon.
